I was talking to one of my friends in my Spanish class about
how I look so much different from my passport and my license
photos since I got ten inches of my hair cut off
(to donate) and dyed a few shades darker. She wanted to
see my license photo so I showed it to her. She
noticed that it said that I was an organ donor and
her, I, and two other people started talking about
being an organ donor and such.

Somewhere in the conversation I said that I
didn’t want my eyes donated. It’s just
some personal thing with me. I have an attachment
to them. Maybe it’s because it’s the
only organ that you see all the time. They’re
an important part of me. I don’t care if
anything else is donated. I just want my eyes.

I told them that this was especially because I
don't want to be cremated and I want an open
casket funeral. And also, many organs can save
someone’s life. Eyes aren't going so save
someone’s life. Sure, it'll make someone see
but it’s not like it's life or death. It's
seeing or not seeing.

The two other people started arguing with me and
saying that it was an extremely selfish thing to
want. They went on about how it could make someone
see, I’m not going to use them when I’m
dead, and that it was like someone being buried
with all their money. They also said that
they’d put marbles or something where my eyes
would be so it wouldn’t make any difference
if I had an open casket funeral.

But to me, it would make a lot of difference.
It’s the one thing I want to be put in the
ground with, out of the many organs that can be
donated from my one body. My eyes make me unique
especially because all of my family that I know
have green eyes. They’re special to me.
It’s the one thing that I want when I die.
